FREE SCREENWRITING SOFTWARE

Plan the screenplay before
you write fade in.

Storyflow is free screenwriting software for the part before the pages: the outline, the beats, the characters, and the structure. The AI drafts them on one canvas so you write from a real plan. It handles the planning and breakdown, and pairs with a formatter for the final draft. No download, no credit card.

What is screenwriting software, and where does Storyflow fit?

Screenwriting software covers two different jobs. One is formatting: writing the screenplay in industry-standard format, with the scene headings, action, and dialogue laid out correctly, which is what Final Draft, WriterDuet, and Celtx are built for. The other is planning: developing the story, the outline, the beats, the characters, and the breakdown that a strong script is built on.

The planning is where a lot of screenwriters get stuck, staring at a blank page because the structure is not worked out. And most formatting tools are not built for that visual, rearrange-it-until-it-works kind of thinking.

Storyflow is the planning side. It is a free AI-native infinite canvas where you draft the logline, outline, beats, characters, and structure, and rearrange them until the story holds. The AI drafts a real starting point from your idea, and when you paste a finished script it can break it down scene by scene.

To be clear about scope: Storyflow does not write pages in industry-standard screenplay format. It is the outline-and-development tool that comes before, and alongside, your formatter. Plan the screenplay in Storyflow, then write the pages in a dedicated formatting app, and use Storyflow again to break the finished script down for production.

HOW IT WORKS

Plan a screenplay in four steps.

The AI drafts the outline and you shape the story.

01

Open a free canvas

Sign up in seconds, no credit card, and your infinite canvas opens in the browser.

02

Describe the story

Give the AI a logline and it drafts the beats, characters, and structure.

03

Outline and refine

Rearrange the beats and outline until the story holds together.

04

Write, then break it down

Write the pages in a formatter, then break the script down in Storyflow.

The plan behind the pages.

Outline, beats, characters, and breakdown on one canvas.

The AI drafts with you

Never a blank page

From a logline: The AI drafts the outline and beats to react to.

Strengthen weak spots: Ask it to fix a soft act or deepen a character.

You own the voice: Edit everything so the story is yours.

How Storyflow fits with a screenwriting formatter

Honest about scope

Where Storyflow fits

Storyflow plans: It owns the outline, development, and breakdown.

Not a page-formatter: It does not write in industry-standard screenplay format.

Pair with a formatter: Write the pages in Final Draft, WriterDuet, or Celtx.

From script to shoot

Break down the finished draft

Tag the elements: Cast, props, locations, and requirements per scene.

HOW WE COMPARE

Storyflow vs Final Draft, Celtx, and WriterDuet.

A fair look: those tools format pages, Storyflow plans the story. The formatting row is theirs, not ours.

One prompt gets me a structured board. But the tactics are my favorite. I run my YouTube scripts through them and my intros and retention got better. It's amazing.

I used to juggle five apps to plan a project. Now I describe what I am making and get boards, lists, and a schedule. All in one place.

Screenwriting software, answered.

What screenwriters ask about planning scripts in Storyflow.

No, and it is important to be clear about that. Storyflow is for the planning side of screenwriting, the outline, beats, characters, structure, and breakdown. It does not write pages in industry-standard screenplay format. Pair it with a formatter like Final Draft, WriterDuet, or Celtx for the pages, and use Storyflow to plan and to break the finished script down.
