Columns have types, and totals are live

This is the part that separates a spreadsheet from a table of text. Every column is given a type — currency, percent, date, duration and so on — so the numbers behave like numbers when you open the file.

Columns worth totalling get live formulas, not pasted answers. Add a row in Excel and the total updates, the same as if you had written the formula yourself.

Turning a board table into a spreadsheet

If the data is already in a table on your canvas, say so. The AI converts it directly rather than retyping it: the column types carry across, and the table's footer calculations become live formulas in the file.

"Give me that table in Excel."

This is faster and more faithful than describing the table back to the AI, and it handles up to twelve tables at once — one sheet each. Where a cell in the table holds a document, the document's title comes across.

A spreadsheet is not a board table

They pull in different directions and it is worth being deliberate:

• A board table is alive on your canvas — collaborators edit it, cells can hold documents, it sits beside the rest of your thinking.
• A spreadsheet is a file you send someone, or open in Excel to do spreadsheet work in.

Ask for a table when the answer stays in Storyflow. Ask for a spreadsheet when it leaves.
