In rough order of how much difference each makes to work you can trust.

Calibration, first. A hardware calibration device (the X-Rite and Calibrite families, or Datacolor's Spyder range) profiles your specific panel and produces an ICC profile your operating system uses. 4) Display: The Four Specifications Worth Understanding

Cutting through spec sheets to what changes your work.

sRGB coverage. The baseline. Anything below about 99% means screen colours will not be reliable. Every display in the families above clears this.

One honest caveat. If your client approves work on an uncalibrated laptop and your audience views it on phones, a substantial part of this precision is invisible to everyone but you. It still matters for print, for brand colour, and for anything where you are accountable for the result. It matters less than the internet suggests for social-first work.

5) Desk, Arm and Light

The monitor arm is the highest return purchase in the physical setup. It puts the top of the screen at or just below eye level, moves it back to a proper distance, and frees the desk underneath. 6) The Software Workspace

The second sense of the question, and where most designers actually lose time.

Design work has three stages and designers usually have tooling for only two.

Stage one: understanding. The brief, the audience, the constraints, what the client has rejected before. Usually an email and a call.

Stage two: exploring. References, directions, sketches, the moodboard. Usually Pinterest, a folder of screenshots, and a Figma page.

Stage three: making. Figma or Creative Cloud, where the actual craft happens and where the tooling is excellent.

Stage three is a solved problem. Figma and Creative Cloud are mature, deep and very good. Almost nobody's output is limited by their design application.

Stages one and two are where the time goes, and the tooling there is a folder of screenshots and a half-remembered call. The visible symptom is revision rounds: work that is well made and answers a brief nobody can now locate, so the argument becomes about taste rather than about the objective.

That is the gap the software half of this question is really about, and the tools below address different parts of it.
