The defining property is not that the space is literally infinite, because it is not, but that the space is not pre-divided. A document decides in advance that your thinking is a sequence. A slide deck decides it is a series of fixed rectangles. A canvas decides nothing, which is the entire point and also the entire problem. Three properties together make a canvas an infinite canvas. Any one alone is not enough.
It is unbounded. There is no page edge, no slide boundary, no bottom of the document. You can always place something further out. Practically every implementation has limits, but they sit far enough away that you never plan around them.
It is spatial rather than sequential. Objects have coordinates, not line numbers. Their relationship to each other is expressed by where they sit, not by the order they appear in a file. Move a note six inches to the left and you have changed its meaning relative to its neighbours without editing a character of it.
It is navigated by pan and zoom. You do not page through it, you move a viewport across it. Zoom is not just magnification, it is a way of changing which level of the structure you are looking at: zoomed out you see the shape of the whole argument, zoomed in you read the individual card.
A useful contrast. In a document, the answer to "where does this idea go" is always some position in a sequence, and you must answer it the moment you type. On a canvas, the answer can be "over there for now, near those two other things I have not figured out yet". Deferring that decision is the single largest practical difference, and it is why the canvas suits early thinking and the document suits finished thinking.
The idea is much older than the current crop of tools, which is worth knowing because the recurring problems are old too.
1963, Sketchpad. Ivan Sutherland's Sketchpad at MIT let a user draw directly on a screen with a light pen, and included the ability to work on a drawing surface larger than the display. That basic move, a viewport onto a space bigger than the screen, is the ancestor of everything here.
The 1970s and 1980s, Smalltalk and spatial interfaces. Work at Xerox PARC established overlapping windows and direct manipulation, and put the question of how humans navigate information space on the table. The desktop metaphor won for files, but the spatial-thinking thread persisted in research on hypertext and idea processors.
The 1990s, spatial hypertext. Systems such as VIKI and later Tinderbox pursued a specific insight: people express relationships by arranging things spatially long before they can articulate those relationships as explicit links. Researchers noticed users would cluster, align, and separate items to mean something, without ever drawing a connection. That observation is the intellectual core of the modern canvas.
2009, Prezi. Zoom arrives in mainstream software as a presentation device. Prezi made pan-and-zoom navigation familiar to a very large audience, though it framed the canvas as a path rather than a workspace, and the vertigo of over-zoomed transitions gave the whole idea a period of bad reputation.
The 2010s, collaborative whiteboards. Miro (founded as RealtimeBoard in 2011) and Mural built multiplayer canvases aimed at distributed teams, and the format found its commercial footing in workshops, retrospectives, and design sprints. Milanote, from 2016, took the same substrate toward creative work: moodboards, references, and project boards rather than sticky-note workshops.
The 2020s, canvas everywhere. FigJam arrived in 2021 next to Figma's design tool. Apple shipped Freeform in late 2022. Obsidian added Canvas in 2022, notable because it brought the canvas to a local-first, file-based note system and pushed the open JSON Canvas format. Excalidraw and tldraw made lightweight, developer-friendly canvases ubiquitous.
The pattern across sixty years is consistent: the substrate keeps getting rediscovered because the underlying human behaviour, arranging things in space to think, never went away.
There is a real cognitive argument here, and it is not just aesthetic preference.
Working memory is small. The widely cited estimate from Cowan (2001) puts the capacity of focused working memory at around four chunks, well below the "seven plus or minus two" figure most people remember from Miller. When you hold ideas in your head, you are working inside that constraint. Putting every idea onto a surface at once removes the constraint, and frees attention for the thing humans are actually good at, which is noticing relationships.
Spatial memory is unusually strong. People are markedly better at remembering where something was than what it was called. This is the mechanism behind the method of loci, the memory technique of placing items along a familiar route, which has been in continuous use since antiquity because it works. A canvas recruits that faculty. Six weeks later you will often remember that the awkward objection lived in the bottom-left, near the red image, before you remember how you phrased it.
Position encodes relationships you cannot yet name. This is the spatial hypertext finding and the most underrated property of the format. You can put two notes near each other because they feel related, before you can say why. A list cannot represent "these are somehow connected, unclear how". It forces you to commit to an order, and ordering is a form of claiming you already understand the structure.
Deferring structure improves the structure you end up with. If you must decide the outline first, you get the outline you could think of at the start, which is the moment you knew least about the problem. Scattering first and clustering later lets the organisation emerge from the material.
The corollary matters as much as the claim: when you already know the structure, every one of these advantages evaporates and the canvas becomes overhead. That is the honest boundary of the format.
Divergence and early-stage thinking. Anything where the goal is to get everything out before deciding what matters. Research dumps, ideation, working out what a project even is.
Synthesis across mixed media. A canvas is one of the few surfaces that holds text, images, video, links, sketches, and documents side by side at their natural size. Research that spans a screenshot, three quotes, and a diagram has nowhere good to live in a text document.
Comparison. Putting six options in a row and looking at them together is trivial on a canvas and awkward everywhere else. This is why moodboards, competitive teardowns, and shot lists gravitate here.
Shared context. For a team, a canvas is a persistent visible artifact. Instead of describing the plan in a meeting, you point at it. Its usefulness comes largely from being one place everyone can see at once rather than five documents everyone reads separately.
Being straightforward about the failures, because they are the reason many people try these tools once and leave.
Navigation at scale. This is the dominant problem and it arrives sooner than expected. Somewhere past a few hundred objects, "where is that thing" becomes the primary cost of using the tool. Search helps only if things are named, and on a canvas most things are not. The mitigations that actually work are frames or sections with real names, a deliberate spatial convention (time runs left to right, certainty runs top to bottom), and periodic cleanup. None of them are automatic.
Linear output. Eventually the thinking has to become a document, a script, or a deck. Canvases are weak at producing sequence, because sequence is exactly what they declined to impose. Getting from a clustered wall to a first draft is a real transition, and most tools help less than they should.
Process with a known order. Anything with fixed steps in a fixed sequence belongs in a checklist or a task tool. Onboarding, a release process, a shot list on the day. Putting these on a canvas is worse in every respect.
The blank canvas problem. Total freedom is genuinely paralysing. An empty document at least implies "start typing at the top". An empty canvas implies nothing at all, and a meaningful share of new users simply stop. This is why every mature canvas product leans hard on templates, and why the quality of the starting structure matters more to adoption than any feature.
Performance and readability at density. Thousands of objects strain rendering, and a dense canvas can become genuinely unreadable, a wall of overlapping cards nobody wants to open.

The most underused property of the format is that zoom can carry meaning.
Treated well, zoom level becomes a level of abstraction. Zoomed all the way out you should see only section labels and the overall shape. At medium zoom you see card titles and clusters. Zoomed in you read the content. Designing a canvas so that each zoom level answers a different question is what separates a board that stays usable at month six from one that becomes an unnavigable sprawl.
Practically this means using size deliberately, with a small number of large headers rather than a uniform field of same-size notes, and keeping the top-level layout stable so that spatial memory has something fixed to anchor to. A canvas whose overall arrangement changes weekly gives up the main cognitive advantage it had.
The honest framing is that AI helps with exactly one half of the work.
Divergence stays human. Generating the raw material, the observations, the references, the half-formed objections, is the part that depends on taste and context. AI can pad it, and padding a brainstorm with plausible filler is actively harmful because it buries the few real ideas.
Convergence is where AI genuinely helps. Reading eighty notes and proposing five clusters is tedious, mechanical, and exactly the shape of work language models are good at.
