Use FigJam when the flow is still being argued about and the people arguing are in the room, and Lucidchart when the flow has to be maintained, versioned and read by someone six months from now. FigJam is faster to draw in and cheaper per seat at $3 per editor per month on annual billing, $5 monthly, and included with paid Figma seats. Lucidchart costs around $9 per month with a free tier capped by document count, and it earns that with shape libraries, layers, conditional formatting and data linking that make the fifth version of a diagram an edit rather than a redraw. Both draw boxes and arrows well. They diverge entirely on what the diagram costs you after the first draft. Nobody draws a user flow once. Almost every comparison of these two prices the first version, which is the cheapest one you will ever make.
Full disclosure: Storyflow is our own product and it is a project canvas, not a diagramming tool. It has no shape libraries, no auto-layout, no data linking and no layers, so Lucidchart is the better tool for a maintained system diagram, and it has no facilitation kit, so FigJam is better for running the workshop. It appears only in the section on what neither tool records.
The cost of a flow diagram is not the first draft. It is the fourth revision, when scope has changed twice.

A user flow has a lifecycle that tool comparisons ignore. Version one is drawn in a workshop. Version two adds the error states somebody forgot. Version three survives a scope cut. Version four arrives after the flow ships and reality turns out to differ from the drawing. Version five is what a new engineer reads on their second day.
Only version one is fun, and it is the only version most people evaluate a tool on.

In FigJam, version four is often a redraw. The shapes are free-form. Nothing is bound to a data source, connectors are convenient rather than structural, and there is no meaningful layering. Restructuring a flow with thirty nodes means dragging thirty things and rerouting the arrows between them, and the practical outcome is that people do not restructure. They bolt the new branch onto the side, the diagram gets progressively less legible, and eventually somebody starts a fresh board.
In Lucidchart, version four is an edit. Shapes come from libraries with consistent semantics, layers let you hold variants in one document, conditional formatting can drive appearance from data, and auto-layout will re-tidy a restructured diagram rather than leaving you to align it by hand. The first draft takes longer. The fifth costs a fraction of what it costs in a free-form tool.
The trap in both directions is real. Teams pick Lucidchart for a scrappy exploratory session and spend the workshop fighting a formal tool. Teams pick FigJam for a system that will be documented for three years and spend those years redrawing. The tool is not wrong in either case; the horizon was never named.
The question to ask before opening either: how many versions of this diagram will exist, and will anyone need an old one? One or two versions, nobody needs history: FigJam. Five or more, with an audience who was not in the room: Lucidchart.

If all you are measuring is time to a shared understanding in a live session, FigJam wins and it is not particularly close.
Everyone can edit it without training. Sticky notes and shapes behave the way people expect. The cursor chat and stamps let a group converge without anyone unmuting. Someone can drop a screenshot of the current product next to the proposed flow in two seconds. For the specific job of getting six people to agree on what happens when a user taps the button, this is the better room.
Lucidchart in the same session feels like filing a form. You are picking the correct shape from a library that has opinions about what a decision node is, and those opinions are correct, and they are also friction at the exact moment you want none. People who are not diagramming specialists slow down visibly, which changes who contributes.
The workaround most teams land on is a handoff, and it is a reasonable one. Draft in FigJam with the group, then rebuild the agreed flow in Lucidchart as the maintained artifact. It costs an hour and it buys a diagram that survives. The failure is not doing the rebuild and then treating the workshop board as documentation for the next two years.
This is where the money is, and it is worth being concrete about what Lucidchart actually gives you.
Layers. A flow with a logged-in variant and a logged-out variant is one document with two layers, not two documents that drift apart. In FigJam it is two boards, and by month three they disagree.
Auto-layout. Insert a step in the middle of a twenty-node flow and the diagram re-tidies. In a free-form tool you move nineteen shapes by hand, or you do not, and the diagram gets uglier with every change until nobody trusts it.
Data linking. Shapes can be driven by an underlying data set, so a flow that reflects real states can be updated by updating the data rather than by redrawing. This is a genuine differentiator and it is also the feature most teams never set up.
Version history that people actually use. Both tools have history. The difference is that Lucidchart's is built for "show me what this looked like before the redesign", which is a question that gets asked about documentation and never about a workshop board.
Where Lucidchart honestly loses on maintenance: if nobody on the team knows it well, none of the above happens. Layers go unused, auto-layout gets turned off because it moved something unexpectedly, and you end up with a slower FigJam. These features are only worth their cost if one person owns the diagram.
The most reliable way to pick between these two is to name the reader.
If the reader can be in the room, use FigJam. Diagrams made with an audience do not need to survive interpretation, because the interpretation happens live. Ambiguity gets resolved by someone asking. The diagram is a prop for a conversation, and a prop should be cheap.
If the reader cannot be in the room, use Lucidchart. A new engineer, a compliance reviewer, an agency picking the project up next quarter, you in eight months. Those readers get no chance to ask what the dotted arrow meant, so the diagram has to carry its own meaning. Consistent shape semantics stop being pedantry at exactly that point.
This also explains a pattern that confuses teams: the same flow legitimately wants both tools at different moments. It is not indecision. It is a diagram changing audience.
A large share of the confusion in this category comes from treating user flows and customer journey maps as one thing. They are not, and the tool answer differs.
A user flow is a system diagram. Screens, states, decisions, error paths. It is precise, it is verifiable against the product, and it is wrong or right. This is diagramming work and it rewards Lucidchart's structure.
A customer journey map is a research artifact. Phases, actions, thoughts, emotions, pain points, opportunities, usually across channels and often with quotes and evidence attached. It is interpretive, it is built from research, and it is never exactly right. This is synthesis work and it rewards a loose canvas with room for evidence, which is closer to FigJam's shape.
Using a journey map where a flow was needed produces a diagram engineers cannot build from. Using a flow where a journey was needed produces a diagram that answers no strategic question at all. Name which one you are making before you open either tool, because the most expensive mistake here is not the subscription.
Both have shipped AI that generates a diagram from a description, and the honest assessment is the same for both.
Lucidchart's AI generates diagrams from prompts and can produce structured starting points from text, which fits its documentation lean. FigJam's AI generates boards, clusters sticky notes and summarises a session, which fits its workshop lean. The sticky clustering is the one that saves the most real time.
The shared ceiling: generated flows are plausible, not correct. A model asked for a checkout flow produces a competent generic checkout flow. Your checkout has a guest path your legal team insisted on, a retry loop that exists because of a payment provider, and a state nobody documented. Generated output is a fast first draft that you then have to verify line by line, and verifying is most of the work. Treat it as a way to avoid the blank page, not as a way to skip the thinking.
Neither AI has any awareness of the research, the decision log, or last quarter's version of the same flow.

The seat maths matters more than the sticker. If your design team already holds paid Figma seats, FigJam editing is included and you are adding $3 per month only for the researchers, PMs and engineers who need to edit rather than comment. Lucidchart is a separate subscription for everyone who touches it.
Against that, one well-maintained Lucidchart document that a new hire can read without a walkthrough is worth more than the price difference, and the comparison only looks lopsided if you price the first version.
Both tools show the flow. Neither shows the argument.
Open any user flow from a real product and you will find a decision node with two branches. What you will not find is why it branches there, which of the three alternatives were considered, the research finding that killed the obvious option, or the constraint from a payment provider that made an ugly path necessary. That reasoning lived in a meeting, and the meeting is gone.
This is why flows get relitigated. Not because the diagram was lost, but because the diagram does not answer the question people actually bring to it, which is almost never "what happens" and almost always "why does it happen this way, and does that reason still hold."

Choose it if one person will own the diagram. These advantages are real and they are also unused by teams where nobody is responsible for the file.
Choose FigJam when the flow is still being decided. Speed and looseness are the point while the answer is unknown.
Choose it when non-specialists need to contribute. A PM, a researcher and a support lead can all edit without training, and their input is usually what the flow was missing.
Choose it if your team is already in Figma. Included editing on paid seats and $3 per editor beyond that is decisive, and the board living beside the design files removes real friction.
Choose it for journey maps and synthesis rather than for system flows, where the loose canvas and room for evidence are correct.
Choose it when the diagram has a short life. A flow that exists to settle one argument this week should not cost an hour of formal diagramming.

For teams whose diagrams are short-lived and internal, yes, and plenty of teams run this way happily. It cannot replace Lucidchart where you need layers, auto-layout, data-linked shapes or documentation-grade shape semantics, and those absences show up on the third or fourth revision rather than on day one.
If your design team already has paid Figma seats, FigJam is effectively included and Lucidchart is a separate subscription, so the price gap is wider than the list prices suggest.
