Use Lucidchart when the output is one diagram that has to be correct, and Miro when the output is a room where many diagrams and the conversation around them live together. Lucidchart is a diagramming tool with shape libraries, layers, auto-layout and data linking, at around $9 per month with a free tier capped by document count. Miro is an infinite canvas with facilitation built in, free tier plus paid plans from around $8 per member per month. Both draw boxes and arrows. They are optimised for different units: Lucidchart for the artifact, Miro for the space it sits in. Lucidchart makes one diagram excellent. Miro makes fifty diagrams findable in the same room.
Every few quarters the same diagram gets relitigated, because nobody wrote down what each branch was chosen over. Storyflow keeps the references, the constraints and the rejected directions on one canvas the AI reads end to end. Paid-only during early access; the Free plan lands before the end of 2026.

Almost every argument about these two disappears once you name what you are producing.
Lucidchart optimises the single artifact. Everything in it exists to make one diagram correct and maintainable: semantic shape libraries, layers for variants, auto-layout that re-tidies after a change, conditional formatting, data linking so shapes reflect an underlying data set. The unit of work is the document, and the document is meant to be read by people who were not there.
Miro optimises the space around the artifacts. The infinite canvas means a program of work can live on one board: the flow, the research that produced it, screenshots of the current product, sticky notes from a session, the open questions, three variants side by side. The unit of work is the board, and the board is where a team gathers.
Both fail when asked to be the other. Miro used as documentation decays: nothing enforces consistent notation, everyone adds things, nobody prunes, and after four months the board is a landscape nobody can read without a guide. Lucidchart used as a workshop kills participation: non-specialists slow down because they are being asked to pick the correct shape, and the people whose input you most wanted contribute least.
A useful test: is the thing you are making read alone, or read with a person present? Read alone means documentation, which means Lucidchart. Read with someone talking means a working surface, which means Miro.

Notation that means something. A decision node looks like a decision node, and it means the same thing on every diagram your organisation produces. On a Miro board, a diamond means whatever the person who drew it intended.
Maintaining a diagram over time. Layers hold variants in one document instead of two documents that drift. Auto-layout re-tidies after you insert a step, rather than leaving you to move nineteen shapes by hand. These are what make revision five cheap, and revision five is where the cost is.
Data linking. Shapes driven by an underlying data set, so a diagram reflecting real states updates when the data does. Nothing in Miro approaches this, and it is the feature that separates a diagram from a drawing.
Handoff to people who were not there. A Lucidchart document reads as documentation. A screenshot of a Miro board reads as the residue of a meeting, and the reader can tell.
Standards-heavy diagramming. Network diagrams, UML, ERDs, org charts, process maps for compliance. Anywhere the notation is not optional, this is the tool.
The infinite canvas, which is not a gimmick. Being able to put the research, the screenshots, the three variants and the open questions around the diagram changes what the diagram is for. On a page-based tool that context lives elsewhere and is therefore lost.
Facilitation. Timers, voting, frames for walking a group through a sequence, stamps, and a template library built for workshops rather than for diagrams. If you run sessions with more than four people, this is decisive.
Holding things that are not diagrams. Sticky notes, images, embeds, documents, video. Real project thinking is mostly not diagrams, and Miro is comfortable with that.
Non-specialists actually participating. A researcher, a PM and a support lead will all contribute in Miro. In Lucidchart their contribution rate drops noticeably, because the tool asks them to be precise before they have anything to be precise about.
Everything in one place for a program of work. One board per initiative, holding everything, is a genuinely good pattern and it is why Miro spread through product organisations.
The most common Miro failure is not a missing feature, it is entropy, and it is worth planning for rather than discovering.
Boards accumulate and nobody prunes. Six months into a program the board has the current flow, two dead variants, sticky notes from a workshop nobody remembers, and a section somebody started and abandoned. New joiners cannot tell which parts are live.
Nothing enforces consistency, so five people produce five notations on the same board and the diagram stops being readable by anyone who was not present when each part was drawn.
Three mitigations that actually work. Use frames and name them, so the board has a structure a stranger can navigate. Put a dated "current" marker on whatever is live and move superseded material into an archive frame rather than deleting it. Assign one owner per board who prunes monthly. None of this is automatic and all of it is cheaper than the rebuild.
If you cannot commit to that discipline, do not use Miro as documentation. Draft in Miro, then rebuild the settled artifact in Lucidchart. The rebuild costs an hour and it buys a diagram that survives.
Both have shipped AI and both operate on the surface in front of them.
Miro's AI clusters and summarises sticky notes, generates starting boards from a prompt, and turns a rough set of notes into a structured output. The clustering is the one that saves real time after a session.
Lucidchart's AI generates diagrams from text descriptions, which fits its documentation lean and produces a competent generic version of whatever you asked for.
The shared ceiling is the same. Generated diagrams are plausible rather than correct, and verifying them against your actual system is most of the work. Neither AI knows the research, the decision log or last quarter's version of the same diagram, because none of that was ever given to it.

The prices are close enough that they should not decide this. What differs is what you get for the money: Miro's cost scales with how many people work on boards, Lucidchart's with how many people build documents, and in most organisations those are different-sized groups.
Verify current tiers on each vendor's page before committing. Both reprice and both have moved their plan structures more than once.
Both show the diagram. Neither shows why it is that shape.
Open a flow from a real product and you will find a branch. What you will not find is the two alternatives that were considered, the constraint that killed the obvious one, or the research finding that forced an ugly path. That reasoning lived in a session, and the session is gone. It is why the same diagram gets relitigated every few quarters: the artifact answers "what", and everyone arrives asking "why, and does that still hold".
Storyflow, which is our product, should be described honestly against both. It has no shape libraries, no notation, no auto-layout, no layers and no data linking, so a maintained system diagram belongs in Lucidchart and Storyflow is not competing. If the deliverable is one diagram that has to be correct and maintained, use Lucidchart. Notation, layers, auto-layout and data linking are what make it survive its own revisions.
If the deliverable is a working space where many artifacts and the conversation live together, use Miro. The infinite canvas and the facilitation kit are the product, and the diagram is one object on it.
If you run both, define the boundary explicitly, because the default is that the Miro board silently becomes the documentation and then decays.
And whichever you open, write down what neither holds: what each branch was chosen over, and why. Lucidchart makes one diagram excellent. Miro makes fifty diagrams findable in the same room. Neither makes the reasoning findable, and that is what people come back asking for.
Lucidchart, clearly, if the diagram is the deliverable. Shape libraries with real semantics, layers, auto-layout and data linking have no equivalent in Miro. Miro is better when the diagram is one object among many on a working board.
For informal diagrams that live inside a team's own context, often yes. It cannot replace it for standards-based notation, maintained documentation, or anything an outsider must read without a walkthrough.
Not for workshops. It has little facilitation tooling and its page-based model does not hold the surrounding material a working session generates. Teams that try this usually end up with the real thinking happening somewhere else.
Miro, comfortably. Timers, voting, frames and the infinite canvas exist for exactly this, and non-specialists contribute far more readily.
Entropy. Nothing enforces consistent notation, material accumulates, and nobody prunes. Use named frames, mark what is current, archive superseded material into its own frame, and give each board an owner who prunes monthly.
They are close, from around $8 per member monthly for Miro against around $9 for Lucidchart, with free tiers on both. Cost should not decide this; the unit of work should.
FigJam is the cheaper workshop option if your team already pays for Figma, and Whimsical is the fastest tool for user flows specifically. Both are covered in separate head-to-heads.
Moderately. The shape libraries are its strength and its curve, and non-specialists slow down visibly. It pays back on maintenance rather than on first use.
Lucidchart, for a single large diagram, because containers, layers and auto-layout exist for that scale. Miro handles a large amount of material better, which is a different problem.
A lot of product organisations run both: Miro for programs and sessions, Lucidchart for the diagrams that become documentation. If you do, define the boundary explicitly, or the Miro board quietly becomes the documentation by default.
Lucidchart, if you are making diagrams. Miro's advantages are mostly about groups, and a solo user pays for facilitation they will never open.
Ask whether the thing you are making will be read alone or read with someone present. Alone means documentation and Lucidchart. With a person talking means a working surface and Miro.
